Back to Basics: The Button Down Shirt

A classic button down shirt can be worked into any outfit for any occasion and it always looks smart and appropriate. Here are a few things to keep in mind when looking for a great fitting button down.
  • A button down shirt looks best when tailored. Think darting vertically down the back like a fitted blazer so it molds to the body and highlights the waist.
  • Fit the widest part of your bust to keep buttons from pulling or gaping. If the shirt is large in the waist, you can always take it to a tailor.
  • Look for details that show quality no matter what the price tag. Accents like french cuffs, unique buttons and quality material (cotton with a little stretch or a sateen finish), make the difference between a shirt you will wear for a few months and one that will last a few years .
